Yeah, what is back masking? (I'm asking to learn.)

When u tape off to prime spot lay paper towards/over filler spot but out away from it then fold it back over itself so it makes a rolled edge instead of hard line and then try not to prime all the way out to it kinda fade the primer out to it

yes that is a cardinal sin in a paint and bosy shop is taping off a hard line b/c you'll never get it all the way out. also never get bodywork or primer wet.

Never get primer wet????????? Never heard that one before. If thats true why do you wet sand primer??????

I think you were trying to say, dont leave primer exposed to moisture for a period of time. In other words, dont drive in primer.

backmasking is taking a piece of tape..say 2 inch..and only sticking half of the tape down..leave the other inch of tape sticking up..with the sticky side facing the area your priming/painting..that way..if your paint or primer does get over into that edge it will just blow under the tape creating a soft edge insted of a hard line....one easy way to eliminate doing that and the hard line is too just take some 320 and DA out a little ways past your worked area and just prime what you need to and let the primer blow onto your 320 sanded area.....and to the guys that say they wanna do it like that cause they dont wanna prime there entire door...you DONT HAVE TO prime the entire door....im only tryin to tell people this from my personal experience as a painter..its not only that its more work...but when you prime a hard line right to the edge of your body work..by the time you feather that line out..your going to be back into your mud work and deeper scratches...AND there is something about that primer that even when its feathered back..it still penetrated into that paint and your likely to end up with a ghost line where your hard edge was...basically all im sayin is take a little extra time to sand out a little bit farther and/or backmask it and you will save yourself a headache in the end...a few of the guys that posted in this thread know exactly what im talkin about

also what keef said is another way of backmasking..basically its just a way to create a soft edge

gosh i hate to use this pic as an example cause im sure he didnt know any better..but if i was gonna paint this truck i would have to sand the hell out of that and probably end up priming the whole side of the truck again..

Well I can honestly say I learned something today (backmasking)

damn thats harsh to throw my truck out there like that! but oh well. thats the way i got it from the previous owner so i dont take credit for the paint job. just the stockfloor.
