My truck started having trouble starting when I would get in it in the morning. Then it started happening in the evenings too. I thought the alternator was going bad, took it to autozone and it passed their test. I thought maybe it was a drain on the battery, so I started disconnecting the negative battery terminal when I left the truck for long periods. Got in it the other morning and click-click-click it finally started but it spit and sputtered till I reved it up... same this this evening. So, it canI had the same problems that you are experancing. It was the starter in my case. The click click click is the starter not turning. Everything you turn the key the EFI is putting gas in the cylinder causing it to sputter on final start up. If your ALT was going bad then you would notice a dim in your head lights and things not running properly. If you have not already i would replace your starter and then follow up with a new ALT. These things went out in this order on my yota... Starter, Alt, Battery... Hope this helps

when I worked for a toyota dealer the thing I replace the most other then timing belts were starters. The contacts in starter either dont contact or stick on. If it just makes a single click each time you turn the key, and after 5-10 times it starts right up it the contacts in the starter which are sold seperately for cheap. To test your alternator you need it load tested, but the cheap way is start you car then pull the neg cable on your bat. If it dies it needs an alternator. Autozone dont know shit. They're like the jiffy lube of auto parts. Check all your grounds too.
