5 months is not even that long when your talking about doing stuff on your free time. Impatient and ungrateful.

I feel for ya Max, I lost a long time friend over doing work on his truck for cheaper than cheap. He complained about how long it took (I had a day job too of course, doing the same type of work he wanted), complained about money and when things blew up he badmouthed me, and complained about the money it cost. To put it in perspective, I did about $20,000 worth of work for $3400. To this day, that truck sits untouched, presumeably because he can't find anyone to do the work anywhere near as cheap as I was "helping it out" for.

Lost a friend, and some pride. Never again will I take money from a friend for work.

One thing I've found with work on vehicles, is EVERYONE wants something for nothing. It's fucking tiring, and makes a guy want to get out and not deal with it. People have this crazy idea that labour should cost them nothing.

sounds like he isnt a friend worth having anyway. ive stopped hanging out with a ton of friends that i grew up with for reasons like that. not work related, but "getting screwed" related. i dont think youll have to worry about your name being on that car when "whoever" finishes it. youve got a good enough rep so i wouldnt worry about that part of it. you've run a shop for 10yrs that has work that speaks for itself, you have your own column in a nationally published mag (MT), your own friggin section on a huge forum (ssm) and not to mention i bet a whole bunch of other cool shit that none of us regular folks know about. so besides the fact that youve lost a what you thought was a "good friend" dont sweat the rest. easier said than done i know but i bet you know plenty of folks that could fill in his "friend" spot. heck, ill be your new friend! haha i heard that you let all kinds of folks sleep on the couch. if i fly to Cali can i sleep on the couch? lol that sounds kinda gay! oh well. damn i wrote a novel. lol oh well.

i got a friend like that. i have only charged him once to do his stuff only cause he is the type that doesn't know how to do it & then tell you it doesn't look like while you're doing. i make my friends help me while i work on their cars unless they wanna pay.

I really appreciate all of your support!

It just sucks to loose a friend over the whole thing. Oh well, I guess I'll start taking applications...

no offense bro, if he was a good friend & knows you do quality work............it shouldn't matter how long you take

You know what's funny? Everybody, including his wife, told him not to bring it to me cause he couldn't afford me and he has no patience. Now he's twisting it all around like everyone said not to bring it to me because I would screw him. His friends know him well. I have good friends that tell me all the time that they would love to have me build something, but they can't afford me and they don't want to wait for me to do it on the side.

I can't believe you even have time for "side work."

This really makes me mad, because I've been through it time and time again. Friends talk the talk like "I want you to do it because I've seen your work and I want the best" and then once they realize that even at a smoking deal it's going to cost some money they start to try to whittle you down on price.

Get real people, buiding a vehicle is expensive, and work you can't do yourself costs money. You wouldn't go to your day job if your boss asked you to give up 6 of your 8 hours of pay every other day because they didn't expect it to cost so much, or they're "having a tight month". Show some respect to the people that put their heart and soul into their work.

I could go on for hours, but something tells me I don't need to stir up old rage...
