Me and a buddy got in to a debate over tipping a shop that does work for you. Yes, I may tip the guy that balances my tires because he's not making much more an hour than I do, but I think that tipping a shop that you give several thousands of dollars (say a shop that does a new frame stock floor bodydrop) is a little over the top. I feel that they quoted the price and if they wanted a tip they should have factored it in to there $2k+ price. This all arises from my buddy telling me he tipped the shop that put in the stall on his camaro $300, after already paying close to $3k in parts and labor. I felt that was a little over the top. I may offer to buy dinner for the 2 or 3 guys in the shop or bring a couple of 12 packs if I stop by, but not a 10% tip. Like to get some other opinions...

I'm kinda like you if i've already dropped 3 grand in a shop that they quoted me on then i feel my balance is paid in full. But if i just have my tires put on or something menial like that then i'll toss the guy turnen wrenches 20$ for lunch just to let him know i appriciate the work he's put into my truck. Cause i know how it is not maken much money so i try to tip people that are actually overworked and underpaid (like i'm sure alot of tire tech guys are now days i know of a few). Thats my 2 cents on the deal i guess.

yeah tipping is for someone who isnt making a lot of money doing something like lets say a waiter, or waitress that relies on tips to compensate their pay check that is next to nothing, now if a guy pays 3k and knows one of the guys there isnt making but like 6 dollars and hour and felt that guy did a hella job on his stuff then hey i might consider a tip but yeah if your buddy tipped like 300 or so, um i got a shop that i dont mind doing some work for him, and if he tips me after paying the full price well i might change my mind on this whole tip debate. lol. but personaly i dont tip unless i know its gonna bridge a gap of pay. your buddy just has way too much money on his hands and needs to come pay my shops rent for a little while.

I've never tipped a shop that I have outsourced work to for my truck. However, so far I have not been happy with any of the work I outsourced. It seems like a weird concept to me. However I got tipped once. Not much, and on a job I got talked down on originally and regretted doing. I'm nt sure how I felt about it. It was definitely weird coming from someone who tried to negotiate every price I gave.

piss on that! id tip a tat artist cuz more than likely if ur a regular and tip decent he'll do some work for free down the road. plus you'll tell friends about him/her.

tipping waiters/waitresses is a diff story. if ur a good server youll get what i think u deserve. no percentage of my bill crap. u suck, u get nothing. ur good, ill tip damn good.

tipping a shop that uve spent an agreed couple thousand dollars at....nope, wont happen, never. doesnt make sense to me. tip if yall wanna but itll never happen with me.

What about auto/boat detailing? I do that for a living now running my own business and I do the jobs with the help of an employee and some people tip me on the job and some people don't. Its real nice to get a big tip but when I charge people for $500 details and they tip me a $100 I kinda feel bad it because I already charged them for my labor and I made a nice profit.

But I wouldnt tip a custom shop that I dropped a ton of money into. Like said before a tip should help someone bridge the gap on there pay.

yeah screw that.. lol i work at a body shop and the only time i expect a tip is if some guy comes off the road and just needs ten minutes of help. lets say his front valance is dragging and it just misses one screw... ill screw it up for him and not charge him but even when they dont tip me i really dont care....

Id love it if one of my customers tipped 10%. But sadly they dont.

I have been tipped ALOT..I would say 75% of the time I get a tip. Then again this is mostly a hobby and the customer realizes they got a lot more than I "charged" them for. And basically I do the same, if I think someone went above and beyond what I was charged I tip.
I had a brick mailbox built a few weeks ago..the guy gave me a really good price (but it still broke me at the time), so I tipped him with some home audio stuff that I really didnt need anyway. Back when I did lawn service folks always tried to tip us with food and dessert. That was cool.
