nice info here. yeah, i found out real quick that there were a bunch of different programs but what killed me were all the different prices. i don't mind spening a grand on a program but when i saw one that was 11k, that blew my mind. i don't know what all it came with, i didn't even look. i am going to look into going to school for it when i get home but i wanted to go ahead and get a program to start messing around with while i am where i am.

I run AutoCAD 2010 right now, and Solid Works 2009, and i even use Alibre 09 on occasion also. I get mine for free from work tho.   Any autocad from 2005 and up will be nearly the same, and a great base to work from.  I suggest any solid works program also.  dont bother with alibre, its shitty.   Taylor

I  use rhino so I don't have to deal with solidworks parametric ass nature, huge file sizes, and forever rebuild times. I surface model though... If I want to physically simulate/FEA something, ill model it in rhino (I have better mesh control) and import it into solidworks.

You should still be able to pick up the student edition with a text book for fairly cheap. We use just basic Autocad 07 & 08 at work. The runs around $4500 or so for a new seat. I've been using Autocad since release 12 in '94 lol.

AutoCAD LT will get you by for 2D. I have used AutoCAD12-present both LT and normal.....Also have used MicroStation ( which is horrible) and VersaCAD ( Which is horrible too) Really if you want something on the cheap that does both 2d and 3d.....Google Sketchup is Free and it also imports DWG and DXF's right from autocad.  My Vote is AutoCAD.....Strong Software....reliable....easy to learn....and used the world over. And ALso google sketchup.....because it works and it is FREE!

We use AutoCAD 2010 here at work, also use Accurender and starting to swtich to Revit. I have been using AutoCAD since Release 12 also. I have been playing with the idea of trying to design a frame and render it in Accurender

If you just want to play with it and not profit from it buy a  bootleg version of AutoCAD 2010. The new interface is like office 2007 (if you like that). If you hate it you can switch back to the classic view and still have the same software.  I have a 2006 "cracked version" that I am not using IM me if you are iterested.
