How can they lower the cost on advertising when they are already pinching pennies?

You understand that the advertisers more or less pay for the magazine yes? So under your idea lowering the cost of advertising, would lower the amount of pages that it pays for. Or in say for example giving half off the price to advertise they would need 2 times as many advertisers to fill up the same amount of money. So that would mean 2 times as many pages of advertisments.

Simple example:
100 advertisers at 1 dollar each and they take up lets say 20 pages.
OR
200 advertisers at .50 cents each and they take up lets say 40 pages.

Crude example but you get the point. The magazine makes no more money yet have to PRINT more pages, more pages = more money to put out the magazine, your example would bankrupt most magazines due to more pages for less income and people up set with a magazine thats got 2 times as many advertisments.

hell i am tryin to figure out how to say this ,i geuss what iam trying to say is instead of seeing 20 pages of aim you could put differnt shops in there and business like your self who wouldnt want there company in the magazine thats all over the united states i know i would. i know there is over 20 business over the united states that could aford a page add that could make up for the loss of aim pages if there was a limit

Kyle does have a valid point. AIM is getting a HUGE discount on their advertising given the volume they do in multiple magazines. So this puts the magazine company in a position that the current ad space that is taken by AIM is discounted very heavily. Currently they are taking a great loss in monthly ad revenue. However, they also have certain space allready sold so there is less time devoted to selling the spots.

times are hard right now for EVERYBODY! but if anyone here is interested in advertising, we do have some great plans in the works right now email me at work mike.alexander@sourceinterlink.com

I know they are getting a discount, hell we design alot of ads for companies in MT. I know the type of discounts offered at times. AIM is offered a discount for many reason, for the number of pages, and a term commitment. Most companies I know in this sport could not handle either of those. Not saying some cant, however I know what a full page ad goes for in all the major magazines and even discounted its nothing to sneeze at.

Kyle do you have a good idea what a full page ad costs in MT for example? I am not putting down what it costs to advertise in MT, however you may be a bit off base on what you think it costs. Additionally if there were 20 more shops that wanted a full page in MT there is nothing stopping them right now from buying such a ad. They dont because they can not afford it. Its not chump change is my point.

"we are going to stop running ads for now to see if it has an effect on sales. if it does i'll put em back in. if it doesnt, i'll probably quit running ads. its so damn expensive!" Jasons reply off s10forum.com

I myself am getting tired of aim's ad's also. I understand they are a great part of the magazine as far as $$$ wise. But when he is basically attacking every air ride business out there, that's when I start to lose interest in looking at the magazine. How can you say were suppose to support the scene and buy the magazine....When the biggest company is bashing the rest of the companys plain as day on almost every 1 of his ads. Also dedicating 1 of his pages to bash a company of his choice monthly. Open the last 4 issues of minitruckin it's not hard to see.

Look at Tailgate. Gil talked them into no ads. What happened? People flipped out about it costing $7 an issue. They were still losing cash on it. It got cut back in releases then shutdown completely.

Even at a discount AIM puts out a big chunk of change each month. I know that ads range, in other mags in the past, from 4000 for half page on up. It's not cheap by any means, there are discounts for long term contracts etc. But it's not anywhere near free or less then a smaller sized ad.
The downside to not advertising is that you are giving new customers away to people that advertise. How did AIM become so big? Look at the pages year after year. When you are new you go to those places because they give the appearance of being a one stop shop. The attack of the month should have stopped already. If it hasn't thats just sad.

Magazines live off of advertising. They need the circulation numbers to maintain the advertising and advertising rate. So both are needed. But what you pay doesn't impact the bottom line as much as the fact that you paid.

Yet again Bob Hase would know about the ins and outs of this as he ran advertising at Streetrucks.
