you prolly learn to weld a lot faster as they know the tricks in setting up the welder . the welding itself you can only learn by trying at it often

After I get done with the body class in 9 months I also thought about going right back in for welding. I already know how to weld but being certified and have graduated a school for it makes a huge difference if you want to find a job for it.
If you just want to be able to weld your own stuff than I would just buy a little 110 gas less flux core welder and start practicing. It's amazing what you can learn just watching youtube videos.

i suggest you buy a one with the gas , you can allways close the bottle and just use flux core wire
if you have the higher power in youre home (think it was 220 v in the states) try to find a used profesional weldingmachine (craigslist), there definetely better than the small buzzboxes that overheat when using them too long where the fluxcore keeps getting stuck the feedwheels slip over the wire during welding giving an eratic weld and there no spare parts available

if you live in a rural area you could make a lot of friends when youre a good welder , might make some cash as whell in youre spare time or earn parts for youre truck (farmers often have their own junkyard), harvest machines often break down when people need them the most , youre going to need a higher power weldingmachine for that kindah work

my buddy just did a cummins swap in his early 90's cc dually and he said it was super straight forward and easy and did it all out of his driveway. his was a 4wd so he said it made it a little more complicated due to the front diff. he said u can use the stock chevy tanks just dump the tanks out and put diesel in(ur right the injector pump does all of the sucking so no need for a in tank pump) he bought the rubber part of the motor mount and fabbed his own and had to modify the trans mount. used the cummins ps pump and just hooked all the hydroboost lines right to it. fits very well!! his isnt bagged or bodied but ur fab skills seem to be up to it and you would have to cut your firewall and trans tunnel either way so might as well only do it once. check out 4btswaps.com they have anything and EVERYTHING on cummins 4bt and 6bt swaps. tons of squarebody gm swaps, mainly 4wd but still same truck. ur truck is coming along well. hurry up and get back to start working on it!!

Thanks man!! I wish I could get home sooner and get back to work on my truck. It keeps me up at night planning things and going over every detail in my head lol. It's funny you said something about 4btswaps.com. I started a bit of a mini build thread over there yesterday and have gotten some pretty good advice so far pertaining to the cummins end of the project. I've heard also that the cummins swap is one of the easiest swaps to do as far as wiring and stuff like that. The space issue is going to be my biggest enemy. I think I'll probably have to notch my cross member for the oil pan to sit down into a bit for hood clearance, but we'll see. Thanks for all the good info and advice guys. It really helps, keep it coming.

Sorry I wasnt trying to jack your thread. You are kinda close by. I have been a Chef for 18 years. I will bring my truck and grill. You weld and I will feed you til you pass out!! Hahahahahaha

I don't care that people have a general disscusion here. I can't do an update everyday as busy as I am anyway and it's all in good fun. The discussions about off topic things keep me laughing and the mood lite.

You come on down with your grill and we'll weld your truck until even the door are welded shut lol.

The link to my 4btswaps thread is

It's basically just a quick over view of this thread and a couple of questions about making things work in my truck. Some killer info over there though.
