A friend of mine suggested just pull the fuel pump outta the new tank and bypass it to the filter. Then just hook up the wires for the guage.

Oh and Maztang, I do have that type.

Thoughts?

OMG... My brother took the camera so I can't show you guys..

I have looked at both the tanks for a while. The only difference I see is this. Yes one has a fuel pump. If I bypass it it would mean it would go in the tank and into the filter. All seems good, on the old tank it goes in and then to a filter. Now, my problem is this, the newer one as a filter bag kind of on the end.

HA, I found a pic of basically what is on the new one:

thread post photo

Notice below the fuel pump there is a little bag (To the left) That is the filter on the new tank.

On the old tank it has kind of a metal cylinder that sits on the bottom of the tank.

My question now is, can I use the one in the new tank or do I have to switch them?

A problem is that the new tank has a little kind of pan in the bottom of the tank that holds fuel around the bag. If I switch them it will be sucking the fuel from in a pan and it only sucks from the bottom, bag sucks all around so it maybe restricted.

What do you all think?

Zac

Edit:

Now that I think of it, in my old tank that type of filter might act as kind of a footvalve that stops the gas from running out of the lines, otherwise the truck would have to reprime every time. In the new one the pump is at the end of the line so it acts as its own footvalve. Make sense?

Little differences in the tank and pump make big difference.I swapped a 91 2600 tank into my 90 2600 and when it got down to 1/2 tank it wouldnt run.Reason: the anti surge plate in the new tank was not like the original and allowed fuel to surge away from the fuel pickup, causing the engine to starve.Check it out real close before u change.BJ

I think actually I will try to find a place to swap my tank. There are a few around. I will see what I can dig up.

Ordered a new sending unit today around $95 not too bad. I will try to put it in the fuel injection tank, if not its $145 for a new one.

Nice job so far. Wish I was 16 again. I burn out before I get half done with anything. Well not everything.

you could pull the pump and go to o'reilly's or some auto parts store and get an external pump. i don't know how well they work but i have heard of it being done. personally bro, i would just spend the money on a new pump or buy a fuel cell. let me know how it goes.

My bro had the camera so it was pointless to post...

Ok, LOTS to say.

I had my problem with the gas tank. I got a new sending unit. There was a problem with putting it in the fuel injection tank - the gauge arm/float was hitting the pan in the bottom which carb tanks dont have. What I did was I got it all in with the arm slightly raised cause it was hitting it and put it beside my truck. I then plugged the sending unit in and hooked up a battery. I turned my truck to the on position but didnt start it- no gas tank lol. I then read the fuel gauge and it did say empty. I figure the sending unit has a reserve set in it so when it says empty you still have 1 or 2 inches of gas so you can get to a gas station. Therefore it is all fine. And yes, I did lift it up to check it was reading right.

Anyways. Now that I got that sorted out I got the old one off. And WOW a real biotch lol. They have double nuts each a different size and all of them are different sizes comapred to the others from rusting away but I actually got them all to unblot.

I ordered 2 quarts of POR15 and will be painting basically everything underneath.

Also ordered new shocks. Canadian tire had the good ones 25% off so the pair came to about $150.

Tommorow I plan to cut off my bumper brackets, prep the frame for paint and get shocks in.

Thanks,
Zac

P.S. The extra sending unit in the pic above with a built in fuel pump is now forsale any resonable offer. Its pretty much mint condition.
