Smoking truck....

Well I had problems earlier with a smoking truck, we replaced the oil and it seemed fine. After sitting for another month we have the same problem. This time we pulled the spark plugs, which were quite new looking infact and found that they were completely BLACK. We looked in the hayes manual and found out it is "oily deposits" What I think it is is bad piston rings. Meaning thw oil is leaking into the pistons and burning causeing smoke.

Now I have to make a decision. I don't want to spend alot of money on the engine right now, not to mention the truck is not legal so I can not drive it to a shop. I would be comfortable changing the rings although I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

I am also thinking of trying the mechanic's sealer stuff which is supposed to stop leaks.

Does anyone have advice for me?

Anyone want to come over for a weekend - free food And help me either, rebuild the top end or just replace the piston rings?

Any advice would be great..

Thanks,
Zac

Let me suggest a cheaper fix for the short run.Change the oil to something like 20-50 Castrol, put a 1/4 can of Seafoam in with the oil and change the plugs to the next hotter range. The heavier oil is less likely to blowby, the Seafoem may help clean the varnish off ur rings and help them seat a little better and the hotter plugs should burn off more of the oil blowby.Just a thought for u to consider before u jump into a ring job.Oh and if u r using a Brand x oil filter go to a genuine MAzda filter.Believe it or not but these old trucks can tell the difference.Lol.BJ

Ok where do I get seafoam? and 20-50 castrol? I am running synthetic right now. Altho its only been run a few times... Also how do I check the heat range of my current plugs?

Thanks,
Zac

He means that you should run 20W50 engine oil that every manufacture makes. Its just thicker oil that won't thin out as much when the engine is hot, thus it won't get by the bad ring as much. There is a product that you can get at Canadian Tire called "Engine Restorer Four Cyllender" that is basically the same as the seafoam. It is in an old school can that is silver, red and blue.

I wouldn't pull the motor and change the ring just yet. Also check the valve seals, since it has been sitting for a month it may have just leaked so much oil that it acted like you fogged your motor.

Go to any good auto parts store and ask them for any good brand of 20-50 oil.Like the man said there may be anither good product in Canada like Seafoam u can use. Ask the auto store for the correct plugs for the truck and then when they look them up ask for ONE heat range hotter.Thsy will know what u mean.I can give u the NGK plug numbers if u can find NGK's in Canada, and I dont see why not. Let me know. BJ

Ok just one ???? does it smoke just on start up then stops If so it might not be your rings at all. It might be your valve seals see when you park the truck and let it sit the oil will leak past the valve seals and set ontop the pistons the longer you let it set the more it will smoke trust me i know i can start my 92 every day and it wont smoke that bad unless I let it rev to high. but i let it set for a few weeks and it will smoke no mater what (well befor i changed the valve seals) my rings are shot as well but the valve seals helped alot. Something eles you might try is poor some Seafoam in each sparkplug hole and let it set for a few days then start her up that will clean it alot faster than the seafoam in the oil or gas. (change oil afterwords)

Ok, I have castrol 20w-50 oil, a oil filter, ngk plugs that are higher heat and Restore 4cyl engine restorer. I'm going to go put it in now.

BTW, it smokes non stop, and basically looks like a really big burnout. Kinda neat but its too hard top breath.

I just finished a 65 Dodge A100 from Arizona that did the same thing. I has a straight 6 and about 20 year old gas. From startup it smoked like a bastard and stank. Did the oil change, added the engine restorer, and a full tank of 94 octane gas. That pretty much cleared it up but I later added some lucas oil to help blowby and stiffen everything up even more.

Well, that was pretty much the scariest f'in sh!t I've ever done... SO I change the oil, w/ a new oi; filter, add the restorer and new plugs. Start er' up and she starts right away and then the smoke comes, an ungodly amount of smoke... So I decided to drive it around the block. First of all, I am 16, very little driving experience. Truck is smoking like a mofo, and on top of that, my door is tooken apart and therefore I had to hold it shut. The other hand I was shifting and steering with and not to mention the bed is just sitting on, no bolts whatsoever.... holy crap. It is still smoking but not alot. How long do you think it will take to burn through the system?

Oh and don't forget, a ton of traffic and I have no lights LOL

Thanks,
Zac
