Man I ran into the same problem earlier this year with my truck. Everything was fine, the truck ran well,it was all good, and one night I was leaving work and I started up my truck and I noticed a bunch of smoke blow into my cab, since my window my down. I was like wtf,and look out and I had thick black and blue smoke billowing out my tiny peashooter exhaust. I couldn't beleive it. I was like what the hell?!!??? I drove off, truck smoking like a mofo and the smoke didn't clear up until the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature. For 2 weeks,I drove around with the damn thing smoking on start up,looking like it was on fire and just huge puffs of smoke.
I took it to my mechanic, and he said just run some Lucas or Engine Honey through it and that might help seal it up. After several days, nothing,it kept doing it. So I said to rebuild my head. I got my head rebuilt, and he ported and polished it and still,$500,the damn thing still smoked like a chimney. Then I decided to go all out and call for a total bottom end rebuild. Upon teardown,we discovered a piston ring was cracked, but not completely broken. The truck still ran fine wwhile it was smoking, that's why we didn't think it was a ring because it ran so silent and smooth, but in the end,it was a cracked ring. So, $2300 later,I had myself a new engine and clutch.
I should also mention,I did had bad ticking coming from the valves at times, and my engine only had 131 000km on it when it started smoking. I currently have 136k on it,but I haven't driven it since June, nor started it.
Good luck.
