Blue, don't be too disappointed. Just because the Mazda truck engines weren't made for power, it doesn't mean you can't pack the power into them. Hopefully this pic will give you some hope...
This is a 2.0 MA turbo that I read puts out over 250 hp. Mind you that the MA was the engine that Mazda used in the first gen B2000s ('79-'84). The engine shown below is in a '81 626. Soo I look at it this way, I think it is neat to see a slow engine that someone made fast rather that a fast engine that someone made faster.
