That'd be my guess. Do you see any fluid at all? It may be low

On these trucks, it's a little tricky to get ALL the air out of the cooling system, but that's important.

Typically I jack up the front end so truck is at an angle, and run with the radiator cap off like 15 minutes as I keep adding coolant/water. Then I check coolant level in radiator by taking cap off while cold like every other day for a few weeks.

is it pretty simple replacing the water pump. never done one before I've always has aircooled vws and never had to deal with that.

My first timing belt of any type plus the internal water pump job B2200 (first "internal" WP) took me a few hours on a Sunday morning, was straightforward.

These links may help:

My hints would be:
get a good-quality replacement timing belt (like factory, Gates, Gatorback, don't go cheap
you do NOT need to remove the big center pulley bolt that requires a 21mm socket unless you need to change out the crankshaft seal (if it has been leaking); there are 6 little bolts instead that require a 10mm socket.
rotate the engine to TDC #1 before starting
do NOT remove the distributor (isn't necessary)
use the paint mark trick to dab paint on the installed belt and the pulleys temporarily, then transfer such paint marks to the new belt, and do not rotate anything while the belt is off
rotate the engine by hand wrench (21mm socket) at least 2 full turns before buttoning up
