@mymmeryloss: Yeah, it sucks.
@DADDY.O: Yes, and I'm realizing this. My problem is this: my goal was to make the truck a reliable DD so that I could work on my Grand Am as a project car, but so far I've had no time or money to invest in the Grand Am because of the work I was doing on the truck.
It's nice having a gas saver (25-27 mpg) that can also haul (last move I helped with, I had a full-size washer, dryer, stove, two dressers, and two nightstands in one load). While I like working on the truck, and it's been a great experience, it's defeating my goal if things break every month. I thought I had everything sorted out. As you can see in the thread, I have essentially replaced everything with the brakes, fuel, steering, suspension, heating, interior, and the engine itself (water pump, timing belt).
Right now, if I sold the truck, I'd break even. Plus, I could take that money and invest it in the Grand Am. (Yes, I have an irrational attachment to my car, long story.) And in the end, I'd love to see someone who can pick up where I left off and make the truck even better.
On the other hand, it's just a head gasket. They aren't that scary. That's a couple hundred dollars and a fun weekend.
