are the straps just so you can "dogleg it" or do they serve a much greater purpose

This truck won't dog leg at all. It will 3-wheel though. Read the post there is info that describes how it works. If that doesn't make sense, Goggle "Chain bridge install" and there is a good write up with pictures.

looks rad seth, there bed mounts in there? might be miss seeing them?

^think the bed goes on with new floor, so probably no mounts yet.

not that it matters now, but for informational purposes, you dont need any special tools other than a press, dial indicator and perhaps a brass hammer to take out the pinion and carriers. if you dont replace the pinion bearings, you do not have to reset, just make sure the backlash is the same as before and you're good. but if thats what he wants, its kinda like the star, he's payin', so i dont blame ya for doin what he wants.

Yeah I know how to set them up, I grew up around it and even took a class. I don't have a dial indicator, or a positioner which makes it easier to check backlash and runout. But again, not enough time or money for me to pull the pinion apart and reassemble.

And there are bed mounts. It tilts. I just need to build the front half of that system.

tilt bed too, you really are building a "classic" style mini. lemme guess, all tweed interior too? some of that stuff looks pretty cool when it all flows together, novelty. just dont put on the chrome rocker panel covers.
