goverment subsidies on any purchase, be it a house, a car, farm products such as corn,  or ethanol are bad for the economy in the long run as it establishes not only a precident that the government will be there to support you (we seem to have forgotten how communist countries operate) but also establish false price floor for said product. Basic econ 101. I dont have a prob with fuel efficient vehicles, whatever floats your boat. I just dont want any more goverment spending as its way out of control and it needs to be changed. I tryed to convince a family member that is in the market for a new hybrid and who is environmentally green to preform the ultimate in automotive recycling and pick out a old vehicle ( I used a 72 burban as an example) and put it back ont he road as a daily. I offered to fab the suspension and setup the powertrain to match thier expectations and explained that it could all be done for less than the cost of them buying a new hybrid. Of course I got laughed off. When my wife thinks its time for a different vehicle this is the route I am going to take her. She gets a "brand new" vintage piece of iron that we will both put together. Mike Finnegan for Prez!

I think the average family is going to be considering many options when looking into their next vehicle such as safety, comfort and other factors such as warranties. I don't assume the average person is going to hit their local salvage yard or local craigslist/autotrader with the intent to put money into updating and repairing an older vehicle that way. They could simply choose a new current model vehicle with the help of resources like consumer reports and finance or lease their purchase. I think some people get stuck in the SSM mindset which is a D.I.Y. custom community. Most people are not custom enthusiasts. Your idea for rekindling the flame of a used vehicle is a good option, but only for the right type of person. NO Mike Finnegan for Prez! Hi all.  I usually don't post anything because I like to read and absorb all the raw data that is dumped out of everyone's average 3.08647 lbs worth of brain matter.  With that said I thought i would throw my .16 cents worth of useless data in: As of Monday June 15,2009 @ 10:21pm est the National Debt is $11,387,026,716,258.27. To me thats a whole lot of tacos and pizza, or bags and valves.  Anyways, getting back to the point.  If we are given a credit from the goverment of $4500.00 to purchase a new vehicle, which sounds great until you take in to consideration that $4500.00 is being added to that growing Trillion dollar debt which increases by $3.8 Billion a day.  The flip side to that coin is that we can stimulate the automotive industry by taking that $4500.00 credit and purchase a brand new car with 60-72 payemnts of $500.00 a month.  While in the meantime in 6-12 months you will loose your job and have to either turn the vehicle in and still have to pay for it in some way shape or form.  Instead of throwing more money at a problem we can't fathom or understand maybe its time to step back and take a fresh look at how this country has gone from the largest manufacturing/producing entity in the world to the largest consumable market, that would rather have cheap goods then something that can withsatnd 42 years of service with minor rust in the doors like my 67 C-10 Shortbed.  I think my brain just took a dump.  Anyways, Socialism has been tried by many people including Adolf Hitler and you see how that worked out for him.  3 and 1/2 years is going to be like an eternity Unemployed since 08, thanks for the change..........  The .16 cents is the time it took me to bleed my brain dry of useless data Food stamps for control arms for an 84 C-30. Sry for spelling errors Google Chrome isnt very friendly with spell check.

In any case, while I do agree that the idea of rebuilding a vehicle is for those that like the DIY thing, I think many people are programed to think that after five to seven years of age, a vehicle is up for replacement. Marketing and greed has gotten us into this mindset. Spending isnt going to fix this. Not to mention that cash for clunkers is basicly a dead program already. Congress approved 1 billion to support this program. The quick math says the 4500 per car estimate for a clunker is grossly over-estimated. At this dollar figure only 222,223 people are needed to max out the program.  more waste, its sad

This is what I know, there are some STUPID people on this site. This is some of the most ignorant, retarded shit, I've ever wasted my life reading. Some of you sound like you didn't make it past 5th grade Social Studies, let alone US History. Go read some books and stop jumping to conclusions all the time.  Do me a favor, look at the checks and balance system of our government 1st before you lynch the president.  I'm with Will; NO  Mike Finnegan for Prez!
