After you have the head installed, with the spark plugs removed, turn the engine over by hand with a 21mm socket and a ratchet for several revolutions. If you can do this without anything binding, your good to go.......if you feel something hitting or binding, stop turning it, and recheck the timing chain setup.
NOW......once you have turned the engine over and past top dead center (TDC) as you had it set when you installed the timing chain, the colored links in the chain WILL NOT line back up as they were when you set it up initially........BUT, it is still in time! There are unequal lengths of chain on each side of the timing gears and therefore the motor would have to be rotated a number of times (over 50!) before the colored links would match back up to their initial setting. BUT, the timing marks on the timing gears should always stay where they are supposed to be, every 2 revolutions of the CRANKSHAFT. In other words, when the engine is set at TDC, and you hand crank it 2 full revolutions, the crank keyway should be at 12:00 o'clock and the camshaft timing gear's timing mark should be at 3:00 o'clock.
When the crank key is at 12:00 o'clock, the crank's balance shaft sprocket has a mark on it that should be at 12:00 o'clock also.
So, don't be confused, and think you've done something wrong, if the colored links on the timing chain don't "go back" to where they were after you hand turn the engine for the first time after setting the timing & balance shaft chains up! Just make sure your not getting any binding or hitting as you hand spin the engine.....slowly.
