Glad to see you working on the truck again. Time to finish that bedfloor!

thanks for looking guys but now i cant get the truck started because it is not timed properly. Once i removed the upper timing gear i lost timing and am unable to start the truck. Can anyone tell me how to retime as if i had replaced the timing belt.

When i try starting the truck it rotates a quarter turn and then just stops and the starter would whine because something is interfering.

I tried setting the first cylinder at tdc and then lined the 1 on the timing gear with the arrow on the head but as i stated the truck would not fully turn over and then just whine.

Pretty much stuck at this point and need help

Did u open the distributer cap and be sure the rotor button was pointed at Number 1 wire when number 1 piston was at TDC? It is easy to get 180 degrees out on these trucks--ask me how I know.Lol.bj

do i want to make sure the rotor points at 1 at the same time the upper timing gear is at 1 and the arrow as well as the closest piston completely at the top

because at this point to even set the bottom end at tdc and the top end at the arrow and number 1 I will have to pull the timing belt.

When I timed mine there is a notch in the crankshaft pulley if u take off the bottom timing cover u will see it that notch should be at top there will be a line in the casting above it then put ur top pulley at 1 mine runs great now

in order to pull the lower timing cover do you need to remove the clutch fan bracket as well as the power steering pump bracket. I have remove both the 10mm bolts and cant get the lower timing cover off. those 11 16th bolt are BRUTAL to taken off

Best bet is to start from scratch. I have had to do this on one before. Line the crank up so that #1 cyl is at TDC (careful hands and a long screwdriver w/ a ratchet on the crank bolt works great), after that line up the cam shaft so that it is on #1 cyl as well. I believe there is an arrow on some numbers on other camshaft gears. If I had my manual w/ me at work I could look that up. Then make sure your dizzy is adjusted to the middle position w/ the 10mm adjustment bolt (this allows you to fine tune in either direction later) and then set it to number 1 cyl as well. Once all lined up put on timing belt and assemble. Should, emphasis on should start up. Its tricky but w/ patience (which I lacked when I first started dicking with it) you should be good to go.

make sure u put the cam gear on right, if u just take # 1 spark plug out, u really don't need to remove the lower timing belt cover, just turn it till #1 comes all the way up.most have a mark on the crank pully anyway. to line up cam line up mark A or mark #1 (some are abc some are 123 on cam gear) to arrow on the distributor housing right above cam gear. your rotor button should point to the left under # one plug wire (9 o clock). firing order is 1,3,4,2. intake valves 1 and 2 will be all the way closed, exhaust 1 and 3 will be closed. so these rockers will be sitting highest with motor at tdc. if your too lean, there are two mixture screws, one on drivers side of carb, one on passenger, both at the very bottom of carb, turn them clockwise 1/8 of a turn or so. chances are, your pretty close if it ran good b4. mine will sputter a lil if its too too lean.

Thanks for the replys l, will try all of this when I am home.

Did anyone find a little oval mark on the right hole to install the came gear on? I did and if this is incorect the cam gear is installed wrong
mazdafvr   +1y
not that I know but maybe, one way to tell is to look at your rocker arms if u think it may be on wrong. intake 1,2 and exhaust 1,3 will be all the way up (closed) at tdc. # 1 is at the front of the motor, intake on left, ect. they should have a little play too if theres any lash and should be able to slide back and forth on the assembly. or another way to tell is if u look at the front of the cam gear/shaft, there is a little pin that sticks out from the cam shaft and when you put your cam gear on, it goes through a hole in the cam gear to keep it spinning with the cam so it doesn't slip and jump timing. this pin should be on top and should be in line with the tdc mark on the cam gear. then you can line up your cam gear with the tdc mark on the top of the motor. hope this helps man, sorry for the book. also, these are non interference motors so nothing should keep it from turning over, should still crank without screwing up valves and pistons even if its off 180 degrees. so id say your battery is probly still dead. good luk
