OK, I've owned my '88 B2200 17.5 years, but just today I noticed just above the ash tray what appears to be a small light. OK, I feel dumb for not noticing that years ago, but is that was this is? If so, is it supposed to light when the ignition is on, or when the lights are on?

I assume one can unscrew the ash tray to get to this and/or change a bulb?

It comes on with the lights. I found one in a junk yard truck and grabbed it. It does a
pretty good job of lighting the inside of the ashtray. I was impressed at how well. That little orange block spreads light well. I found a bulb for mine at Radio Shack.

Cusser, next time you go to the junk yard, pull a pigtail from the heat/ac slide controls... the one for the twist controls is too big.
The light on the end will twist right in to the back side of that... same for the backside of the cigarette lighter.
Then you just have to solder and shrink wrap to dash light power source.

I can't believe you missed this whole topic on MazdaTruckin!

Sin -you mean there's no light assembly in there, unless I add it ???

Yeah, I saw the thread on MazdaTruckin, didn't really know what all were so excited about. Mine's an SE-5 or SE model, so maybe never had that.

Taht might be a while. The yard I frequented about 8 times in the last 1.5 years (think it was "new" about the time I found it) is down to like 1 B-truck from the dozen it had. And with the scarcity of B-trucks in Arizona, doubt that they'll get many more. So another treasure trove gone. At least I was able to supply a few MT and MBS members, and get a 3-spoke wheel for myself, and a nice console.

Yeah, it was an option most trucks came without.
Kinda' like the B-pillar plastics and deluxe door seals.

He He! Here's a little photographic montage of what you missed Cusser!

Here's the ashtray light.....

But most of the trucks come with it like this......

NO BULB!!

But as SCL said, you can grab the tiny bulb pigtail from the A/C & Heat slide controls and solder it into the same circuit and then use it for the ashtray light. Like this!

I got the whole harness for it which included the connector also, this way I can remove it if I wanted to......doubt that I ever will, but.....

thread post photo

And all taped up.....now I just have to plug the small bulb harness into the connector and the truck will have the faint glow of the ashtray........for mood lighting I guess, since I don't smoke!

thread post photo

This is what plugs into it.....

You can also add another pigtail like this to light up the orange ring around the cig. lighter as well. See the small hole here......most trucks won't have a bulb for that either.

I have exactly the same set up in my 92 B2200, and did a post on it over on Mazdatruckin last year. Empty bulb holder and no wiring for it, and no light behind the cigarette lighter. I've picked up 2 white LEDs and mounts from Radio Shack for under 5 bucks to correct this, which fit right in, and I will be doing exactly what Axel is doing on his. You have to drop the dashboard cover to get to it all. I think the light is intended to softly illuminate the gear shifter as well as the ash tray at night.

Mazda saved a buck by not fitting the wiring and the bulbs!

I think I'll just not take up smoking !!!

I just added these two lights to my truck as well.

I tested the cigar lighter light and it also does a very good job of lighting the orange ring around the lighter.

I'm planning to add courtesy lights on a delay timer at some point too.

I'm glad I decided not to take up smoking. Mrs. Cusser's lungs are just too valuable !!!
