lol @ the people from each company flying in on expensive private jets that cost thousands of dollars to operate.

I watched some of the questioning on Capitol Hill yesterday, got disgusted and turned it off...I am against any type of bailout, wall street or big 3, but in all fairness i gave them a chance and listened to the CEO's depositions last night...what a crock of shit..Ford admitted to having enough cash to operate with little or no scale backs thru the 1st quarter of 2010, possibly the 2nd quarter of 2010...Chevy who admittedly is in dire straights in the US, is showing profits in other countries with their various brands, but wont use those profits for the US brands claiming those profits are to be used and invested in the foreign ventures..Chrysler seems to be the only legit one of the three, but is the most willing to restructure and/or liquidate their holdings...I would say no matter what happens this will be the end of Chrysler. anyhow, let them file bankruptcy and restructure...at least if they do that they can get the government to step in amd negotiate concessions with the unions..
Not trying to offend anyone here,I HAVE worked for a union and my father has been a union member for 36+ years, but the most often stated problem when it came to restructuring, all 3 auto companies said the unions will NOT agree to any concessions. Now the union workers shouldn't be the only ones to give benefits up, but if the company is willing to restructure and the upper management is willing to give things up then the unions should be ready to do the same..

even if they get bailed out the econmy in general is still shitty and people are not gonna go car shopping. if the government really want to help they should give a tax credit to the consumer for buying an american car. this would get people to buy if its a decent amount and will keep people working.

i think alot of consumers would buy buy if they feel they were getting a good dealer hell maybe a tax free day. you pay what the sticker price says.

the tax credit sounds like a good idea but the "american" car company dosent exist....."american" cars are built in other countries....however toyota, nissan and honda all have plants in america..so what defines an american car?

Being a union member i would agree with your case.....managment should give up more but everyone has to make cuts.....kinda like my child support argument....lol....she wants more money cuz its more exspensive to live but if i have to make adjustments in my life so should she.......

they did the tax credit in the 80s and it was very successful(watched cnbc today for like 6 hours). i think corporations moved to fast to globalize and we aparently arent ready, i feel they need to consolidate severely and get back to basics. like Mat(ice) the suppliers and manufacturers will still be around but they too will shrink quite a bit because of a slow down in ordering if the worst case scenario plays out. i think a lot of people will take a hit but we all have to be patient(which people seem to lake a lot of these days) and let everything play out, this isnt going to take us down. this will be an awakening for a lot of people and lucky for people who are my age and younger to better manage money and make more responsible less risky decisions. one thing i did learn watching it today is, this i didnt really know, that a huge reason, not the whole reason. the banks who got their bailouts to give loans have restricted (most limit loans to a 700 credit score and above) are not giving the loans and are holding our money. maybe if that is the case they should take the bailout money from the people who have the score needed to get the loans.

these people make a vehicle for 5 thousand dollars worth of materials, they sell for forty thousand....its their own fault. they had more than enough profit to keep on trucking. dumb decisions will put u under. we shouldnt have bailed out wallstreet, and we shouldnt bail out automakers. let only the strong survive. this is why there are 10 employers to 1 employee.

btw. the unions are complete bullshit. all it is, is a bunch of people who are scared of losing there job because they arent doing there job well. and want a free ride

That has to be the most ignorent thing said in this whole thread. I don't know where you are coming from but I have NEVER been afraid of losing my UNION job, or my job regardless of union, at all in my field for that matter because I know that I know my shit and can do a job correctly and safely. Want to know how I know? It's because of my bullshit union job that trained me so well. And as far as free ride? I work my dick off in -20 freezers then back up onto a 110 degree rooftop day in and day out, working with ammonia and many other hazardous materials. I have to work to payback my schooling or I have to pay it back. My union isn't the strongest in my area and if I was this lazy ass that you speak of I'd be looking for a job, and looking in another area b/c nobody else wants to hire an employee like that. The only people getting free rides are the CEO's and friends who run their companies into the ground and walk away with million dollar packages.

haha your right i dont know what the rules and regulations would or should be. i know the ford factor in chicago also builds the volvo station wagon so with ford would you include volvo and mazda? and gm owns saab. honestly they should just give it to anyone who wants to buy a car so americans can start spending some money and banks some work to do

Unions are one of the reasons why the automakers are in this situation to begin with. It is absurd for someone working on an assembly line in Detroit to be making $75 hr PLUS outrageous benefits. Foreign automakers here in the south pay around $40 hr which include a normal benefit package. This has been coming for along time...and as far as the bailout package; the government has already authorized $25B to give to the automaker for help producing "green" vehicles. They are simply trying to change the terms of the deal to use the funds for liquidity issues. The automakers are arguing that there will be no need for the money to make greener cars if they can

Im sure glad my union , LOCAL 20 SMWIA, helps me keep my job,,its not that i have had non stop sheet metal fab and install training and yearly safty training for 15 years...Ive been a union member for 15 years and yes there are some bad apples but that is in everything in life...REMEBER the union brought us the weekends off, took children out of the mills and plants, fought for us to remain safe at work, and they make the company give back to us since we give 2/3 of our awake lifes to the companys we work for!!!! UNION YES!!!
