Thanks guys!

It kinda feels "at home" Linn, I was slightly scared that the quick release would push the wheel out too close to the driver's position, but it didn't really, it prolly moved it closer by an inch overall...

Mikey/dealwithit, it's not so much as I don't like the tan, it's that it is another color added to the scheme of things, I am trying to keep it to black, silver(ish), and red which is what will end up as the final paint scheme(although there is a touch of yellow here & there, but not in the paint scheme), but for the time being the dash, seats, and seat belts will stay tan, eventually I'll paint the dash, swap out the rest of the gauges, head liner, and other little pieces that are tan...as far as the seats, when I do the rest of the interior, I'd like to get a set that is slightly sportier - with more bolstering, but still want a fair amount of comfort...

dwi, I've checked out your build several times, true, it is long, and very interesting - informative read, I deffinately like what you've done with your truck & thanks for the comp on mine!

Slacker!

Only joking

Cool build man, some guys were admiring it on another mazda truckin site so I thought I'd better take a look.

Three questions (started on page 8, forgive me):
[*:q0ywey8v]What diameter and width are the wheels?[/*:m:q0ywey8v]
[*:q0ywey8v]Is it a 5 stud setup?[/*:m:q0ywey8v]
[*:q0ywey8v]What type of rear disk brake setup is that?[/*:m:q0ywey8v]

And some advice :

Don't bother with cross drilled rotors unless it's for looks / cool factor, they don't do jack and cause the rotors to crack if you actually drive the thing *fast*. IE, avoid them if you are going to drive it fast because they are likely to be trouble. If it's for looks mainly/only carry on as you are

Keep up the good work,

Fred.

Thanks Fred, if I can only get it to run like your's I'll be happy!!

The wheels are Motegi DP10's, 18x8.5 with a 5x4.5 lug pattern wrapped in 245/40-18 falken ziex 512's, I had the front hubs redrilled from the 6x5.5 to the 5x4.5 pattern, and the rx-7 rear axle shafts and rotors drilled from 4x4.5 to 5x4.5 pattern and had to install longer studs to compensate for the thicker wheels (oem steel wheels were thin thus the short studs)

As for the rear, it's an 85 rx-7 gsl-se rear, came with the 9.5" disc from the factory, along with a 4.07:1 gear ratio and clutch type lsd....no worry on the cracking or warping of the rotors, I've had them cryotreated, which will keep that from happening, plus let them last longer too....

If you have any more q's or tips, just give me a shout!!

Wow, they don't look otu of place at all really. I'm planning 16 or maybe 17 if i have to to fit brakes...

I doubt your cryo will save them if you push them fully hard. Even solid disks crack, its just there is no natural weak point in a solid disk, whereas a drilled disk is prone... they really do offer no performance benefit with decent pads too. check out the serious cars and you will find slots only.

these are the full monty :

only available in certain sizes thoguh...

Thanks again Fred,

I originally had a set of 16*7.5's (there is a pic in one of the earlier pages of the thread) but when I went to swap the rx axle, the axle shafts & rotor hats were too small to convert to a 6 lug pattern, so I ended up trading BJ the 16's, doing the 5lug conversion all the way around, found the 18's for pretty cheap. I wanted the 16's to be sorta oleskool since that was the big wheel back in the day when I first got my truck, not to mention they would have let it ride a little closer to the ground, but hey I'm not complaining, the 18's are wider, and fill in the wheel wells nicely, just a shame that they dwarf the rotors now, I wouldn't mind putting a set of wilwoods or the like on it, but due to lack of $$ I'll have to wait a bit on that....as for the rotors, they prolly won't be pushed too hard, I wanted to loose the drums in the rear, and maintain or even better my braking on the truck since I'll have a few more ponies under the hood than stock....I knew that the slotted/drilled rotors are suceptable to cracking & warping, but I liked the looks, and after I read the facts on the cryotreating I figured I'd give it a shot, esp since the cost of the rotors & cryo treat was still cheaper than a wilwood type conversion and less time consuming as I wouldn't have to figure out how to adapt such a conversion to the truck, not to mention that a normal to mildly agressive driving style wouldn't push them to the breaking point like if I were to carry it to a track day & really push the truck to it's limit. Which as it is now, I couldn't pass a tech inspection due to lack of a roll cage, and several other safety items...Prolly the hardest it will get pushed will be when I carry it to the local 1/8 mile drag strip & take it down for a pass or two so that I can see what she has, but the braking shouldn't be too much of a factor there....maybe one day down the road I can put a bigger set of brakes on it, and get it to where it would pass a tech inspect as I would like to run a road course with it just to see what it would do

Yeah, no worries, I wasn't saying that you need bigger, just that solid with good pads >>>>>>>>>> drilled with any (good or bad) pads.

Which page is the 16" pic on?

Here is what I do to brakes :

I did that to 258 x 22 rotors on a 165ps toyota corolla, my girlfriends car

Before they ran out the pads were mintex M1166 which are damn damn good.

I have the same compound in the ute and it does stop on stock brand new brembo rotors (chinese would be just as good) but they get BLOODY hot... and just won't last. IE will wear out too quickly.

Man those pads are toast!!!I've got hawk pads on it now, the next step down from their track pad, a little more dusty/noisy, but excellent stopping qualities...

There is a pic of one of the 16's on page 2 @ 1/2 way down the page....keep in mind, the truck didn't have the engine in it when that pic was taken, so you'd have to imagine it sitting a little closer to the ground...

Those pads were track pads

Thanks for the pointer to page 2

Alright guys & gals, I've been bowed up today, having new furniture delivered, and moving the furniture already in the house, loading some up to carry to the wifes mothers, and believe it or not, doing a little on the truck....I don't have much time otherwise I'd stay & chat, but figured ya'll needed your weekly fix of the spy pics, so here goes, I temporarily bolted up the intake & carbs so I could do some figuring on the throttle cable linkage, but that is as far as it goes, so without further adue, here are the pics, enjoy & I'll check in later on this weekend when I get a chance to breath from the honey-do list lol haha!!
